City & County of Broomfield Achieves Silver Designation in Charging Smart Program | Drive Clean Colorado Celebrates Broomfield’s Advancing EV Leadership  & Readiness

Broomfield, CO – August 11, 2025 – Drive Clean Colorado is proud to announce that the City & County of Broomfield has officially received a Silver Charging Smart designation, recognizing Broomfield’s strong leadership in electric vehicle (EV) readiness and sustainable transportation infrastructure.

Charging Smart, a technical assistance and certification program led by the Interstate Renewable Energy Council (IREC) and funded by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Vehicle Technologies Office, helps local governments streamline regulations, strengthen EV policies, and accelerate the adoption of EVs and charging infrastructure. Broomfield’s Silver designation reflects its commitment to reducing emissions, supporting clean air, and expanding EV accessibility for residents, businesses, and visitors.

As a partner in the Charging Smart program, Drive Clean Colorado provided Broomfield with technical support, policy recommendations, and practical strategies to strengthen its EV readiness. Through this program, Broomfield advanced initiatives such as improving EV charging infrastructure permitting, aligning zoning regulations, collaborating with local utilities, and expanding community outreach to encourage EV adoption.

Broomfield’s progress builds on its broader sustainability goals and complements past successes, including energy efficiency upgrades, renewable energy projects, and efforts to support clean mobility options for the community.

By earning the Silver designation, Broomfield is making it easier for residents to charge EVs at home and on the go, attracting EV drivers and supporting local businesses. The city and county’s leadership demonstrates how communities can create a thriving clean transportation network that supports economic growth and environmental health.

“Participating in the Charging Smart Cohort has been a key step in advancing Broomfield’s EV goals. With expert support from Drive Clean Colorado, we gained a clear roadmap to build on our current efforts, identify opportunities and plan strategically for growth. This program has helped us make real progress in expanding accessible EV charging and building a strong foundation for long-term success.” — Kirstie Tedrick, Sustainability Coordinator, City and County of Broomfield

“We commend the City and County of Broomfield (CCOB) for its dedication to building an EV-ready future,” said Jenna Wyatt, Program Manager at Drive Clean Colorado. “As a long-time member of Drive Clean Colorado and a leader in clean transportation, we are thrilled to see this important accomplishment come to fruition. CCOB’s outstanding work—particularly in meeting the Regulation Criteria—plays a crucial role in creating an environment that supports EV adoption and infrastructure deployment. The extent of progress made in this area is no small feat, and CCOB stands out as a leading example in Colorado of how to accelerate the transition to clean transportation.”

“By removing barriers to EV deployment, the City and County of Broomfield is opening doors to cleaner air, economic development, and other benefits of transportation electrification. The Charging Smart program is proud to award Broomfield with the first-in-the-West Charging Smart Silver designation,” said Ed Gilliland, Senior Director at the Interstate Renewable Energy Council (IREC).
