As electric vehicles (EVs) become more common across Colorado, one challenge remains consistent: access to reliable, convenient charging—especially for residents without garages, workplaces with charging, or nearby public stations. Community-based charging can help close this gap, but for many organizations, the cost, complexity, and long-term maintenance of charging stations feel out of reach.
For St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Fort Collins, that challenge became an opportunity—and an example of what’s possible when the right partners and resources come together.
As part of a broader effort to reduce energy use and emissions, leaders at St. Luke’s recognized that clean transportation aligned naturally with their mission. While EV charging fit their values, it initially felt like a longer-term goal due to financial and technical hurdles. That changed through a partnership with a local EV charging provider company, Enertech, which offered a turn-key approach to EV charging that removed both financial risk and operational burden from the church.
Enertech installed three dual-port Level 2 charging stations that are now open to the public 24/7. Through this turn-key model, Enertech managed the design, permitting, and installation processes, as well as the ongoing maintenance, billing, and grant reporting. Local utility rebates and state funding through Charge Ahead Colorado helped cover installation costs, allowing the project to move forward without financial risk to the church. The stations operate under a revenue-sharing model that ensures St. Luke’s never pays out of pocket.
Since opening in spring 2025, the chargers have supported hundreds of charging sessions. Located at a trusted community site, they serve parishioners during services, neighbors overnight, employees during the workday, and residents who otherwise lack convenient access to charging. What began as a sustainability goal has become a reliable, well-used community asset that fills a real gap in local charging access.
Drive Clean Colorado developed this case study to highlight how partnerships, incentives, and turn-key solutions can help communities move from interest to implementation. Drive Clean Colorado is pleased to share real-world examples like St. Luke’s to help organizations across Colorado explore and advance community-centered EV charging projects.
