Drive Clean Colorado is excited to highlight one of the biggest key players in EV adoption: Tynan’s Nissan and Volkswagen. Their Sales Director, Markus Kamm, has been actively involved in EV sales from the beginning when Nissan launched the Leaf EV in the early 2010’s. Tynan’s Nissan and Volkswagen became Colorado’s top EV dealership, achieving national recognition as the #1 volume dealer for the Nissan LEAF and Volkswagen ID.4, thanks to strong marketing and partnerships with DCC. In 2023, they also led the state in sales for the Nissan Ariya and set a record by selling 340 LEAFs in just two months in 2024. They are on course to maintain these high-volume sales, especially as they anticipate deliveries of the new Volkswagen ID. Buzz at the end of 2024
Tynan’s has supported and continues to support Drive Clean Colorado at many of our events as they recognize the importance of getting EV-curious drivers behind the wheel of an all-electric vehicle- and what event is better than a ride and drive! DCC and Tynan’s have also hosted numerous “Group Buy” events which helped “catapult our stores’ EV sales to newfound heights.” Markus notes that the combination of their affordable EV deals and DCC’s trusted community voice led to strong consumer interest and incredibly successful EV adoption events. DCC’s efforts to educate the public, dispel myths, and spread resources around the community have been incredibly instrumental towards the success of EV purchases at Tynan’s Nissan and Volkswagen.
Who you are and what your role is at Tynan’s Nissan?
My name is Markus Kamm and I am the Sales Director for Tynan’s Nissan & Volkswagen in Aurora, Colorado. I have had the pleasure of being in the Tynan family’s employ for more than 15 years and was here & actively involved in all of our EV sales efforts early on, when Nissan launched the LEAF EV some 12 years ago.
How is Tynan’s working to improve electrification efforts and accelerate the adoption of EVs?
Things have come a long away since the 2012 Nissan LEAF first embarked on Colorado roads all those years ago. Back then, there was virtually no public charging network and folks mostly had to rely on charging at home via expensive wall-charger units that were equally costly to have professionally installed. That original LEAF also was equipped with a miniscule-by-today’s-standards 24 kWh battery that provided the vehicle with just 70 miles of range per charge. As you might imagine, I like to remind today’s prospective EV buyers of these stats when the subject of “range anxiety” enters into the sales conversation. But even back then, folks made it work and generally loved the little hatchback, which also proved to operate mostly trouble-free. Nostalgia aside, Tynan’s has been at the forefront of public EV adoption in our state, attending every Ride And Drive, press or similar event we could in order to get as many people as possible behind the wheel of the LEAF to get them understand that this new, alternative, non-traditional mode of transport wasn’t so unusual at all in its real-world application. We also made sure our entire sales staff was well-trained in all things EV, charging and state & federal tax credits in order to be able to speak intelligently about the vehicle and EV lifestyle with consumers. I am happy to say that we succeeded in our mission of putting hundreds of original-generation LEAF vehicles into Colorado driveways. By the time the second generation Nissan LEAF launched for the 2018 model year, Tynan’s was already well-stablished as one of Colorado’s EV sales headquarters and we used that sentiment as well as ultra-low lease payment advertisements to catapult our Nissan dealership to becoming the nation’s #1 volume Nissan LEAF dealer during several of the last few years. When Volkswagen brought its ID.4 EV SUV to market for the 2021 model year, our sales and marketing experience with the Nissan LEAF as well as ongoing partnership with DCC allowed us to quickly become the state’s #1 volume Volkswagen ID.4 dealer for that inaugural year. Fast forward to the model year 2023 Nissan Ariya launch and, you guessed it, despite its delayed launch (due to the nationwide post-pandemic new vehicle inventory shortage) Tynan’s Nissan became the #1 volume Nissan Ariya dealer in our great state. And lastly, going back to the Nissan LEAF, we ended up selling a record-setting 340 of them during July and August of 2024, earning the nation’s top volume sales crown for that model once again. And we’re not done yet, as there’s plenty of year left to continue to sell EVs in unprecedented volume!
What are the next steps for Tynan’s Nissan?
Our Volkswagen sales staff could not be more excited for the impending ID.Buzz launch. Rumored and talked about for years, production of this reimagined-for-today VW Bus officially started this month, with dealer deliveries scheduled for November/December of 2024. We have 20 of these iconic EVs on the way and cannot wait until they start occupying charger space all over Colorado. On the Nissan front, we’ll have to wait just a little bit longer for the next generation LEAF which is scheduled to start production domestically in summer of 2025. With the thousands of first and second-generation LEAFs we’ve sold over the past dozen years, our expectations for the all-new 2026 Nissan LEAF could not be higher.
How does partnering with Drive Clean Colorado help you work towards your goals?
We could not be more pleased with our ongoing, longstanding partnership with Drive Clean Colorado. Over the years, we have partnered with DCC on numerous, co-sponsored “EV Group Buy” events which helped catapult our stores’ EV sales to newfound heights. We found that when these sales events were advertised and co-sponsored by DCC (as well as various cities and municipalities) versus just our dealerships, sales would literally skyrocket. There was something about the combination of our attractive EV deals and the reiteration thereof by the trusted voices of neutral third parties that sparked strong consumer interest and created high levels of consumer confidence which in turn allowed us to make these sales events ultra successful. And since a lot of these sales ended up being leases, we were then able to sell many of these folks another EV just 2 or 3 short years down the line, stretching the EV ownership cycle even further, beyond just the initial sales events. Fast forward to today and we cannot overstate our appreciation for all of the public education and outreach efforts DCC provides to all its dealership partners and sponsors. I am convinced that without these ongoing efforts, we would not have the level of EV interest from Colorado’s car-buying public we, the dealers, get to enjoy and capitalize on today.
Recently, @GovernorPolis even visited Tynan’s Nissan in Aurora to celebrate some of the lowest EV costs in the country. Check that out here.
